Book presentation of Heads and Tails exhibition catalogue

The English catalogue of the homonymous exhibition was edited by Prof. Vasiliki Penna and was published at Ghent (ISBN 978 94 9232 131 2; 406 pages + 119 colour plates).

The book as a whole attempts to shed novel light on how the human body is perceived and represented in different social and historical contexts, from Antiquity to the Early Modern Period. The perspective adopted is that of small-scale artefacts: coins, medals and miniature artworks. The intention is to bring to the front stage, for re-appraisal, the antique notion of 'beauty in small-scale' (κάλλος εν σμικρώ).

The book presentation was followed by a lecture given by Dr Sergei Kovalenko (Deputy Keeper, Numismatic Department, Pushkin Museum) with the topic: 'Monetary portraiture in the Northern Black Sea littoral'.

The event closed with the eminent actor Valeriy Barinov reciting selected poems by C. P. Cavafy (in Russian translation). A selection of Cavafy poems in the form of a booklet, under the evocative title Body Reminiscent, was distributed gratis on this occasion to the attendants.

K.I.K.P.E

Ioannis Fikioris (1917-2014), In memoriam

His family's fate (his surname derives from the word officio, i.e. the assumption of public responsibilities) obliged him to dedicate himself to a life of alertness and social contribution. His subtle nature, which led him to poetic and philosophical reflections, helped him perceive culture as the foremost instrument of formation and improvement of the individual and the society.

This man has been a Doric, noble embodiment of the vigorous bourgeois ethos. Under all his successive capacities, he always acted with a sense of social responsibility, courage, kindness, moderation and selflessness. Having been practiced in the legal way of thinking, he naturally apprehended what was appropriate, emphasizing on the proper solution with a sense of justice and leniency. This was his Aesthetic.

He deeply loved the simple pleasures of life, the white Cycladic island, friendship, a good book, a spirited conversation, great poetry. This was his Ethic.

He discreetly passed over to the other side with his eyes kept open. All of us who were fortunate enough to have been close to him and have learned from him, let us keep within us that which is most honest: his translucent figure.
