While Classical and Hellenistic coinages produced in the Mediterranean have more defined relationships between their types, denominations, production by certain issuing authority, and function as monetary instruments, Archaic coinages and their semiotics are not so clear. This short monograph explores the functional premises of archaic coin types — what we know and what we do not.
